How HSN codes work under GST
The HSN code you put on each invoice line is what fixes the GST rate for that item. Getting it right keeps your invoices compliant and your returns clean.
Code decides the rate
Every product maps to an HSN code, and that code maps to a GST slab — 0%, 3%, 5%, 18% or 40%. Pick the wrong code and you charge the wrong tax.
Digits by turnover
Turnover up to ₹5 crore generally shows a 4-digit HSN on B2B invoices; above ₹5 crore shows 6 digits. Check the current rule for your turnover and transaction.
HSN vs SAC
Goods use HSN codes; services use SAC codes. Both point to a GST rate. On a mixed invoice you use HSN on the goods lines and SAC on the service lines.
A note on accuracy: the codes and rates here are indicative and for guidance only. Classification is legally sensitive and rates change. Always verify the exact HSN and GST rate for your product on the official GST portal (cbic-gst.gov.in) or with your CA before you bill.

HSN code finder FAQ
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is an international system of numbers that classifies goods. Under Indian GST, each product maps to an HSN code, and that code determines the GST rate you charge on the invoice. Services use a similar system called SAC (Services Accounting Code).
