Honest comparison

Looking for a BUSY accounting software alternative?

BUSY is a serious GST accounting package with real depth for Indian SMEs. RetailDek is narrower on purpose — browser-based GST billing, POS and inventory for the shop floor. Here is a straight comparison so you can pick the right shape of tool.

Where BUSY is the better choice

BUSY has a solid reputation among Indian MSMEs and the accountants who work with them, and the architectural argument behind it is sound. As of mid-2026 their site describes accounting, GST and inventory held together in one system — sales and purchases posting to ledgers, CGST/SGST/IGST computed, stock tracked across locations, GST reports prepared and purchase data reconciled against GSTR-2B, with multi-branch accounts reportable together or separately. The value is in the joins rather than any single module: when the books, the returns and the stock all read from the same entries, whole categories of month-end discrepancy simply never arise.

BUSY is the better choice when you need accounting depth for an SME — a real ledger, branch accounts that consolidate, GSTR-2B reconciliation as a routine part of the month, or a CA who participates in your books directly rather than receiving exports. If your business is run from its books rather than its counter, choose the accounting package.

Where RetailDek takes a different approach

RetailDek is browser-based. Nothing installs per counter machine, there is no local server or licence to move, and you reach the same data from the shop, home or a second outlet with a login.

It is counter-first rather than ledger-first: fast POS billing with barcode scan-to-bill, shelf labels, and shift close with cash reconciliation at the end of every shift.

GST invoices split CGST/SGST/IGST automatically from the place of supply, print HSN and SAC codes per line with a rate-wise tax summary, apply your round-off rule and follow your own number series.

Inventory is native and godown-aware — multi-godown stock control on every plan, with stock reserved, deducted and replenished as part of the sale and purchase transaction.

Users are included in the plan rather than licensed per seat: up to 10 during the 30-day free account, then Silver 3, Gold 6 and Diamond 10 — with role-based staff access on every plan.

Reporting covers the retail day — Day Book, sales, stock and GST reports, GSTR-1 export and a stock and activity audit trail on every plan. It is not a full statutory accounting ledger.

Who should look at RetailDek instead

Retail businesses where billing volume, not journal entries, is the daily work. If your staff spend the day scanning items and taking payments, and accounting is a monthly conversation with your CA, a counter-first system is less to operate than a full accounting package.

Owners who want access without a machine. Browser-based means the Day Book, sales and stock are a login away from anywhere — no remote desktop, no data-file copying between shop and home, no per-counter installation when you add a till.

Teams that grow. The free account allows up to 3 users for 30 days, and the annual plans include 3, 6 and 10, with role-based access on every plan so a biller sees the till and not the purchase costs or margins, plus an audit trail of who changed what.

As with any accounting-heavy comparison, running both is a legitimate answer: bill and manage stock at the counter in RetailDek, and hand your accountant the periodic exports and GST reports for the statutory books.

What migrating actually looks like

Begin with masters, and prune while you do it. Export your item master and party ledgers, then bring across only what you actively transact with — long-running accounting files accumulate a lot of dormant records. Carry item name, unit, HSN or SAC, GST rate and selling price, and party name, GSTIN, state and contact.

Agree the boundary with whoever keeps your books before you move anything — this is the step people skip and regret. Your accountant will have a view on which date makes the year-end simplest and what they need captured on both sides of it, and a five-minute conversation up front prevents a reconciliation argument three months later. Once the date is agreed, enter opening stock and outstanding balances and bill forward from it.

Your existing data file stays exactly where it is. Changing how you bill at the counter does not require rewriting the accounting history behind it, and you should retain the old system for prior-period reporting and audit regardless. The Diamond plan includes assisted data migration for the masters and opening-balance load.

How to choose between them

Decide what the software is primarily for. If it is the place your accounts are kept — ledgers posted, GSTR-2B reconciled, branches consolidated — choose the accounting package and do not compromise on depth. If it is the place your shop bills, choose for counter speed, stock accuracy and multi-user access.

Then count the cost of running the thing, not just licensing it. Who installs it on a new till, who takes the backups, who applies updates, and what happens when the machine holding the data fails on a Saturday? Installed software answers those questions with a person; browser-based software answers them by not raising them. Neither answer is wrong, but the operating load is real and it rarely appears on a comparison table.

Switching from BUSY — FAQs

For the daily retail work — billing, inventory, purchases, expenses and shop reports — yes for most shops. It is not a full statutory accounting ledger though, so if you depend on complete books, multi-branch consolidation or routine GSTR-2B reconciliation, keep an accounting package for that and use RetailDek at the counter.
