Honest comparison

Looking for a Vyapar alternative for your shop?

Vyapar is a strong mobile-first billing app for small Indian businesses. RetailDek takes a different route — a browser-based GST billing, POS and inventory system for shops that bill from a counter, run more than one user, and want stock and reports in the same place. Here is an honest look at both.

Where Vyapar is the better choice

Vyapar made a bet on the phone at a time when Indian billing software still assumed a desktop, and that bet paid off. As of mid-2026 their site describes GST invoicing and quotations, stock tracking with batch and expiry detail, barcode and thermal-printer support, several payment modes, sharing bills over messaging, and synchronisation between their mobile and desktop applications. Reduced to one sentence: a shopkeeper can raise a correct tax invoice while standing in the aisle. That is harder to build than it looks, and it is why the app is as widely used as it is.

Vyapar is the better choice for a solo owner or a very small business that bills primarily from a handset, needs to keep working when connectivity drops, or benefits from the sheer volume of Indian tutorials, trainers and peers who already know the app. If mobile billing is the entire job, adding a counter system on top of it buys you nothing.

Where RetailDek takes a different approach

RetailDek is browser-based rather than app-installed. You sign in on any laptop, counter PC or tablet, and the same data is there — nothing to install per machine, nothing to sync between devices.

GST invoices split CGST/SGST/IGST automatically from the place of supply, carry HSN or SAC codes per line, and print a rate-wise and HSN-wise tax summary that lines up with your return.

The POS screen is built for a counter, not a phone: barcode scan-to-bill, plus shift close with cash reconciliation so the drawer is counted and signed off at the end of every shift.

Stock lives in godowns. On every plan you can hold and move stock across multiple godowns, with reserve, deduct and replenish handled as part of the sale and purchase flow.

The 30-day free account allows up to 3 users — so an owner, a biller and stock staff can all work at once from day one. Paid annual plans cover 3, 6 and 10 users.

GSTR-1 export and a full stock and activity audit trail are included on every plan — there is no feature gating between tiers.

Who should look at RetailDek instead

The clearest signal is the counter. If your bills are raised at a fixed billing point with a barcode scanner and a cash drawer — a kirana, a garment store, a hardware shop, a supermarket aisle — a browser-based POS with shift close and cash reconciliation fits the day better than a phone-first app.

The second signal is people. The moment a second or third person needs to bill at the same time, or you want the owner to see the Day Book while a staffer is billing, you are in multi-user territory. RetailDek's free account allows up to 3 users for 30 days, and the annual plans cover 3, 6 and 10.

The third is stock spread across places. If you keep a back godown, a second shop or a warehouse and you need stock held separately per location, multi-godown control, included on every plan, is the reason to look. If none of those three apply to you, Vyapar may well be the simpler answer — and we would rather you stayed on the tool that fits.

What migrating actually looks like

Migration in this category is almost always the same three lists: your items, your parties, and your opening balances. Export your item master and your customer and supplier list from your current tool, tidy the columns, and bring them in as your starting masters. Item names, units, HSN or SAC codes, GST rates and selling prices are the fields that matter most — getting HSN and rates right at import time is what makes every later invoice and every GST summary correct without rework.

Do the changeover on your quietest day of the week, and take a physical stock count while you are at it. Most shops find their recorded quantities drifted from reality a long time ago, and a migration is the one moment when correcting that costs nothing extra. Enter the counted figures as opening stock, add what each party owes and is owed, and you begin with numbers you can actually trust.

Past invoices should stay where they are. Re-keying years of old bills has no payoff — archive the PDFs, keep read access to the previous app for reference, and let the old system own history while RetailDek owns everything from the changeover forward. Help with the masters and opening-balance load is included on the Diamond plan.

How to choose between them

Choose for the shop you will be running in eighteen months, not the one you are running today. Billing software is genuinely annoying to change once your item master, your number series and your staff habits have settled into it, so a little forward projection is worth more here than a feature checklist. If you can see a second biller, a barcode scanner or a back godown arriving within that horizon, factor it in now.

Equally, do not buy capacity you will never use. If in eighteen months you expect to be exactly where you are — one person, one phone, invoices raised as needed — that is a complete and sensible answer, and the mobile-first app is the correct tool. Growth is not obligatory, and paying for headroom you do not need is its own kind of mistake.

A note on fairness: feature sets, plan limits and pricing on both sides change often. Switching from Vyapar — FAQs

For GST invoicing, inventory and counter billing the jobs overlap heavily, so most shops find the day-to-day work maps across. They are built around different habits though — Vyapar is mobile-first, RetailDek runs in a browser on a counter machine with multi-user access. Trial both against your own workflow before switching.
