Where Khatabook is the better choice
Khatabook took one problem seriously and refused to be distracted from it, which is why it worked. As of mid-2026 their site describes a digital stand-in for the paper udhaar bahi khata: a separate khata per customer holding credit and payment entries, reminders sent to customers over messaging, online backup, access to the same account from more than one phone, and support across many Indian languages. The insight was not technical. It was that merchants already had a system — a physical notebook — and the software should mirror that habit rather than replace it with an unfamiliar one.
Khatabook is the better choice when what you actually need is a credit ledger. If you sell on udhaar and the thing that costs you money is losing track of who owes what and forgetting to follow up, a purpose-built khata does that in fewer taps than any billing system ever will. Buying a POS to solve a notebook problem is the wrong trade.

Who should look at RetailDek instead
These two products are not really competitors — they answer different questions. A khata app answers "who owes me money?" A billing and inventory system answers "what did I sell, what is left, and what do I owe in GST?" Most shops need the first before they need the second, which is exactly why Khatabook grew the way it did.
The moment to move up is usually one of these. You have taken GST registration and now need to issue proper tax invoices with CGST/SGST/IGST and HSN codes. Or stock has become the thing you lose money on and you need quantities that move by themselves. Or you have put in a barcode scanner and a cash drawer and need a real counter flow with shift close. Or a second person has started billing and you need multiple users with role-based access.
If none of those has happened yet, stay where you are. Adding a billing system to solve a ledger problem is more software than the problem deserves.
What moving up actually looks like
Because a khata app and a billing system store different things, this is less a migration than a fresh start with one carry-over. The one thing worth bringing across is your customer list with their current outstanding balances — export or note down each party and what they owe, and enter those as opening receivable balances in RetailDek.
Your item master is the piece you will build new, because a ledger app has no reason to hold one. Budget an afternoon for it: item name, unit, HSN or SAC code, GST rate and selling price. This is the highest-value hour in the whole switch — correct HSN codes and rates here mean every invoice, tax summary and GSTR-1 export afterwards is right without rework.

How to choose between them
Ask yourself what you would lose if the tool vanished tomorrow. If the answer is "I would not know who owes me", you need a khata. If it is "I would not know what I sold, what stock is left, or what to file", you need a billing and inventory system.
And note that this is not a permanent either-or. Plenty of shops track udhaar in one place while they get GST billing running properly in another, and consolidate only once the new habit sticks. Move at the pace your shop can absorb.
