Honest comparison

Looking for a Tally alternative for retail billing?

Tally is the reference point for accounting in India, and for good reason. RetailDek is not trying to replace an accounting ledger — it is browser-based GST billing, POS and inventory for the shop floor. Here is where each one is genuinely the better tool.

Where Tally is the better choice

Tally occupies a position no other product in India holds, and it is worth being precise about why. The software itself is deep — as of mid-2026 their site describes tax invoices and bills of supply, e-invoicing with IRN and QR codes, GST return workflows, multi-location inventory and reporting that holds up as transaction volumes grow. But the stronger asset is everything around it. Chartered accountants read Tally data fluently, staff arrive already trained on it, and there is a partner or trainer within reach in most districts of the country. Software you can hire for is worth more than a feature comparison suggests.

Tally is plainly the better choice when accounting depth is the point. A full statutory ledger, TDS and TCS handling, cost centres, multi-company consolidation, or a CA who works inside your books directly — those are reasons to stay, and a billing-and-inventory tool is not a substitute for a properly kept set of accounts. We would rather say that clearly than sell you something that does not fit.

Where RetailDek takes a different approach

RetailDek runs in a browser. There is no installation per counter machine, no licence dongle to move, and no separate step to reach your data from home or a second shop — you sign in and it is there.

The product is built around the shop floor rather than the ledger: fast POS billing with barcode scan-to-bill, shift close and cash reconciliation at the end of each shift, and a daily Day Book.

GST invoices split CGST/SGST/IGST automatically from the place of supply, carry HSN or SAC per line, apply your round-off rule, and follow your own invoice number series and prefixes.

Inventory is native to the same system, not a bolt-on: multi-godown stock control on every plan, with reserve, deduct and replenish handled inside the sale and purchase flow.

Users are included rather than counted separately — up to 10 during the 30-day free account, then Silver 3, Gold 6, Diamond 10 on annual paid plans.

GSTR-1 export and a full stock and activity audit trail are on every plan, for businesses that need to see who changed what.

Who should look at RetailDek instead

Retail shops where the daily job is billing, not bookkeeping. If your team spends the day scanning items, taking payments and closing the till — and the accounting is something your CA handles monthly — a billing-and-inventory system aimed at the counter will feel lighter to run than a full accounting package.

Owners who want access from anywhere. Because RetailDek is browser-based, checking the Day Book from home or looking at a second shop's sales is just a login, not a remote-desktop session or a data-file copy.

Businesses adding staff. Up to 3 users are included during the 30-day free account and the annual plans cover 3, 6 and 10 — with role-based staff access on every plan, so a biller sees the till and not the margins.

A common and completely sensible pattern is to run both: bill and manage stock in RetailDek day to day, and hand your CA the periodic exports and GST reports for the statutory books. You do not have to pick a side.

What migrating actually looks like

Start with masters. Export your ledgers and stock items, then bring across the parties and items you actually transact with — a surprising share of a long-running Tally company file is dormant. Carry over item name, unit, HSN or SAC, GST rate and selling price; those fields drive every later tax split and HSN summary.

Pick a clean cut-off date, ideally the start of a month or quarter. File the closing period from your existing books, then enter opening stock and outstanding party balances in RetailDek and begin billing from the new period. Nothing gets double-counted and your CA has one clear line between the two systems.

Keep your historic company file. You do not need to re-key past years to switch billing systems, and you should not — retain the old file for reference and audit, and let RetailDek own the forward-looking counter work. Diamond includes assisted data migration for exactly this masters-and-openings step.

How to choose between them

Ask who actually sits in the software all day. If it is a biller at a counter, optimise for billing speed, barcode flow and shift close. If it is an accountant posting journal entries and reconciling ledgers, optimise for accounting depth — and that argument points squarely at Tally.

Then ask your CA one question before you move anything: what do you need from me each month, and in what form? If exports and GST reports satisfy them, a counter-first billing system is a comfortable fit. If they need to work inside your books directly, factor that in.

Switching from Tally — FAQs

For most retail shops it replaces the daily billing, inventory, purchase and expense work. It is not a full statutory accounting ledger, so if you rely on Tally for complete books, TDS/TCS handling or complex consolidation, keep it for accounting and use RetailDek at the counter. Many businesses run both quite happily.
